Federal grant to save Portland Fish Exchange refri

Posted in Chanel Handbags on 17.05.12

PORTLAND, Maine — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine replica watches, on Monday announced a $320 replica watches,000 federal grant to repair the refrigeration unit in Portland’s Fish Exchange.

“One piece of the refrigeration system has failed and the rest of it isn’t too far behind,” said Bert Jongerden, general manager of the Fish Exchange, in a statement. “This funding is coming in the nick of time and we’re going to get the repair work started as soon as possible.”

In her announcement of the Economic Development Administration grant award, Pingree echoed concerns by Fish Exchange officials that a broken-down fish refrigeration unit in the coming hot summer months could be catastrophic.

“Ninety-five percent of the fish landed in Maine goes through the Fish Exchange replica watches,” Pingree said in a statement. “Keeping that facility operating — and keeping the fish cold — is critical. The refrigeration system is in immediate need of repair and the work needs to start soon. This federal funding is going to make it possible to get some new equipment in right away.”

The refrigeration system is nearly 20 years old, and has developed what Pingree’s office described as “significant leaks.”

It’s Lonely at the Top — Why Peer-to-Peer Network

Posted in Chanel Handbags on 17.05.12

Chip Roame, Managing Partner of Tiburon Strategic Advisors is one of the famous names in market research and strategic consulting in financial services. He has worked with over 360 top financial services’ firms, and has been engaged for over 1500 assignments. He has become a trusted advisor to a large number of financial services’ CEOs. As you might expect, this is not easy to do. He has personal and business relationships which traverse firms, years, sectors, etc. This year, I was invited as press, to attend his storied Tiburon CEO Summit, a semi-annual event, now in its 11th year. While most of the press wrote and reported on Chip’s annual predictive industry trends, economic report, and other opinion backed research, I remained fascinated with the Summit’s back story. Within the industry, the Tiburon CEO Summit has a certain “mystique” about it. This was what I wanted to know more about: the attendees, their reasons for religiously returning year after year, and about what makes the Tiburon experience so valuable? After 22 summits, this year’s CEO Summit reported record attendance. Why?

Let’s start with the attendees. The list is of “who’s who” in financial services. It’s by invitation only and the majority of attendees are current/former clients of Tiburon. These are CEOs and senior level executives representing the largest and newest financial services’ firms. As compared with many other conferences, this one draws a wide variety of financial services sectors including banking, brokerage, insurance, investments and wealth management. While almost entirely comprised of men, there is an unmistakable “leave your ego at the door” attitude at Tiburon. It’s no wonder that so many business deals happen here. While most of the conference is made of structured meetings, you know that most of the real conversations are happening in hallways, break rooms, restaurant, bar, ect. I can see the appeal for these high-level executives. They need a place to find wisdom and friendship. It’s lonely at the top — where can a CEO turn for unbiased advice and camaraderie? Other top-shelf execs!

I would say that many of these industry titans see the value of Tiburon as a place of comfort and kinship. It’s an opportunity for a true peer-to-peer networking experience like no other. For these guys, financial services has been under tremendous scrutiny of late: post-Madoff issues, housing crisis, bank failures and more which are creating even more pressure on financial services’ firms. There is new technology and globalism that must be understood and leveraged. It’s no wonder that this year’s Tiburon CEO Summit had record attendance.

To learn more about Tiburon itself, I spoke to Matt Lynch who recently joined the firm as a principal. Matt described Tiburon as producing “fact-based research with opinion.” For Matt, the Summit is a place of intellectual honesty, where attendees each bring deep knowledge and leave with friendships, wisdom and actionable ideas. It’s all about the attendees who can come together and let their guard down,” says Matt. Here they can have unparalleled access to top subject matter experts and discuss some of their own management challenges in a group setting or more commonly, in the hallway. CEOs may feel isolated at times and “silo-ed” in their roles and/or industries. They must make decisions on deploying resources, most of which are far-reaching. I can see the value of a place of where friendship and wisdom can happen simultaneously. I think it’s a place of healthy debate at the highest levels. I am positive that the opinion and interpretation offered by this forum have been particularly valuable during the past few years.

Being “one of the guys” is probably one of the best parts of the Tiburon Summit for most CEOs. They can find friendship amongst their peers and that’s the draw that brings them back year after year. Chip maintains close Professional Tattoo Machine, personal relationships that are essential to his ability to provide the strategic consulting that this firm is known for. He is able to create honest, trusting relationships with CEOs. According to Chip, his “secret sauce” is really not a secret. He credits his training at McKinsey for teaching him how to be a consultant and to be a partner with his clients.

In an industry largely populated by quants, Chip’s right-brained enthusiasm and presentation style sets him apart. His data/research is presented, explained and supported through the use of a variety of interesting real-life examples. In my opinion, he makes the information accessible and actionable instead of just numbers and graphs. In full disclosure, as press, I received a pre-release of Chip’s 165 page PowerPoint presentation. I opened the file and quickly closed it. Oh, no, I thought! Two hours of Powerpoint slides? I can’t sit through that! In fact, the opposite was true. I was taken with Chip’s ability to carry the entire two-hour presentation effortlessly. His presentation strategy was simple: present data, interpret it, and make it actionable. Of particular note to me was Chip’s ability to explain using real-life business examples to make his research numbers come to life. To engage a room full of CEO’s for two straight hours, you must be quick, knowledgeable and easy on the ears and eyes. This audience is smart, analytical and has heard and seen a myriad of presentations. Believe me, this “testosterone-powered” audience is also not afraid to question data, information or opinion that they don’t agree with or understand.

Attendees say that they come to Tiburon for two things: to listen to the new research/hear the trends/predictions from Chip, and to glean knowledge from their peers in a truly unparalleled peer-to-peer network. This trust among leaders is impressive. They each face management challenges and obstacles. Tiburon has become the place where the “unstructured” time is of the same or even greater value than that of the “structured” time. Of equal or perhaps greater importance, is the peer-to-peer networking which takes place at the Tiburon CEO Summit. The environment and access to industry leaders has led to innumerable business deals which were initiated at a Tiburon CEO Summit.

I wanted to hear what the attendees had to say about what the Tiburon CEO Summit. First, I spoke with Skip Schweiss, who was open and eager to talk about Tiburon and what it meant to him. While Skip spends most days as CEO and president of Ameritrade Trust Company, I was impressed with Skip’s immediate response to acknowledge the value of this type of platform as well as the value of the peer relationships and the deals made based on Tiburon meetings. Skip was quite strong in his opinion as to the “value” of a “place” and an organization such as Tiburon. Skip said plainly, “Tiburon is a reality check.” I asked Skip to explain and he went on to say, “There is huge value in listening to peers breakdown their business challenges, opportunities, and also Starter Tattoo Kits, how they fixed, implemented and addressed organizational change.” He appreciated the opportunity to listen and learn from independent research information presented by Tiburon and other sources.

Chuck Lewis, CEO of MyVest Corporation, told me about the early days of the Tiburon CEO Summit. He said that it was first held in the conference room of a law firm in San Francisco. After attending Tiburon for many years, Chuck still says, “Tiburon is always stimulating. It takes you out of your own world. It’s like a time-out.” As we talked, Chuck and I agreed that the reason it worked was that everyone was on a level playing field in terms of responsibilities. As MyVest is a technology firm in the financial services field, Chuck must stay up to date on each of the financial services’ sector. And that’s not easy. Attending Tiburon’s CEO Summit twice a year helps!

“It’s the only financial services conference that I attend, ” says Frank Trotter, president of Everbank Direct. He went on to say, “I come back with pages of ‘nuggets’ which may be a series of refinements to what we are doing, re-affirmation of trends or something new. I look at Tiburon as a chance to come out of the ‘gopher’ hole and take a look around and talk to lots of smart people,” Frank remarked.

How about the women of Tiburon? Who are they? I was able to catch-up with Cheryl Nash, president of Fiserv, a financial services’ industry technology firm. She remarked, “Tiburon is a place where I can catch-up with the same people twice a year. Moreover, as a vendor to many of these firms, I am able to speak with my own clients at the most senior level.” When I asked Cheryl about the male vs. female ratio Beginner Tattoo Kits, she laughed and said that its’ no different here. I joked with her about the short line at the ladies room at financial services conferences and meetings!

What did I learn at the Tiburon CEO Summit? While it was terrific to listen to the “state of financial services” as reported by Chip and meet some interesting and influential people, I learned something really much more valuable. I learned that everyone needs a safety net and a strong, supportive peer network to go to for advice and conversation. Learning never stops no matter what level you achieve. While counterintuitive, it’s probably more important as you rise up the corporate ladder and your responsibilities grow. That is “mystique” revealed — Tiburon CEO Summit has grown to become a place of learning and support for financial services’ A-listers.

When a 20-Year-Old Secret is Revealed ‘I Refuse t

Posted in Chanel Handbags on 17.05.12

I first met Jennifer Gilbert at a DivaMoms Book party in January for a little-known author named E L James and her book trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey. I hadn’t yet read the books and was intrigued and slightly amused by the palpable energy in the room. Women were pushing and shoving each other to get the chance to listen to this pleasant Tattoo Machine Tattoo, unassuming woman describe how she created a love story out of the trappings of S&M. No one knew at the time that this would be the beginning of the phenomenon known around the world as THE BOOK.

Across the room, Jennifer Gilbert and I found refuge from the Fifty Shades madness. Settled into a corner (the only place we could find quiet), she told me she wanted to be part of the PowerwomenTV web series, as she felt she had a strong message to share. We talked and she told me about her business, Save The Date, and how she was named by Ernst & Young as Entrepreneur of the Year, her short stint on the Housewives of New York City and how she was ready for the next chapter in her life. Talking to her, it seemed like she had “it all” — she was a mother, a wife and had a thriving business.

She told me she had written a book and that she was about to reveal a twenty-year-old secret that she had told very few people about, but felt compelled to share with the world. She had tears in her eyes when she confided in me that her son had alopecia and his courage had propelled her to reveal her authentic self to the world.

I didn’t push her as to what her “secret” was — I took a cue that if she wanted to tell me, she would. Before she left, she promised to send me her book. I knew that in this book would be her hidden story.

The next day Rotary Machine Tattoo, a package arrived from Jen. Her book, I Never Promised You a Goodie Bag, looked like a great beach read until I turned the book over and read this:

In May 1991, a 22-year-old Jennifer Gilbert was visiting friends in New York’s West Village. It was a beautiful day — the sun was shining and she was happy. That was moments before she was attacked and nearly stabbed to death.

I read her book in a few short hours as the story was compelling, horrfying and inspiring at the same time — when I finished the book, I sent her an email promising her that I would interview her for PowerwomenTV. A few months later Tattoo Gun Buy, under camera lights, we sat in her apartment and filmed as she read passages from her book. There Jennifer bravely shared her story about the moments she was attacked by a man with a screwdriver.

Jennifer was stabbed 37 times.

There was not a dry eye on set. From my camera crew, to the producer, to myself… we were all incredibly moved by Jen’s story. Jen taught us the true meaning of being a survivor — to gain strength and power from moving on. We were reminded that life continues to teach us lessons in ways we could never imagine.

It is my hope that you will find strength and inspiration in my interview with her.

New ‘Super’ PAC Hopes to Woo Younger Voters

Posted in Chanel Handbags on 16.05.12

Crossroads Generation looks to bring the under-30 set into GOP camp in eight states Jack Gillum The Associated Press May 14, 2012 WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama counted on the support of younger voters four years ago. Now, a new Republican-leaning "super" political committee wants to bring them to the GOP's side.

Crossroads Generation, a new super PAC formed with the help of a handful of established GOP groups Bandage dresses sale, is tapping into the economic frustrations of under-30 voters facing dim job prospects, crippling student loans or the prospect of having to move back home with their parents.

Starting Monday, the PAC is launching a $50,000 social media ad campaign targeting younger voters in eight swing states, including Ohio and Virginia. Their ultimate goal: woo younger Americans to the Republican side, including some who supported Obama in 2008.

"Younger voters aren't looking for a party label," said Kristen Soltis, who advises the new super PAC's communications. "They're looking for someone to present a solution for how things are going to get better."

Crossroads Generation is drawing upon $750,000 in seed money from GOP organizations like the College Republicans, the Young Republicans Discount Emilio Pucci Dresses, the Republican State Leadership Committee and American Crossroads – itself a super PAC that has raised $100 million so far this election cycle to defeat Obama and will support the Republican nominee, very likely to be Mitt Romney.

"We want to give a voice to our generation," said Derek Flowers, 28, the group's executive director, adding that his generation has faced unprecedented levels of unemployment and debt.

The super PAC is also planning a ground game for this fall, leveraging the roughly 250,000 student-members of the College Republicans who span more than 1,800 campuses across the country.

Obama's campaign defended the president's efforts to reduce Generation Y's unemployment and debt. It said under Obama's leadership the economy added 4.2 million private-sector jobs and that unemployment among recent college graduates is lower than when Obama took office in January 2009.

Conservative and GOP efforts to target under-30 voters this election cycle have been growing, as groups like Generation Opportunity have tapped into Millennials' uneasiness about the economy and the ballooning costs of a college degree.

To be sure, they are issues Obama has realized are essential in maintaining the support of younger voters. Just last month, the president pushed for lowering college costs and freezing student loan interest rates – a message he took on the road to three states strategically important for his reelection effort.

Student loan debt has reached roughly $1 trillion in the United States, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Bank of New York has estimated that 37 million Americans – roughly 15 percent – have outstanding loan debt. About two-thirds of that debt is held by people under 30.

Maurice Sendak’s Thin Skin

Posted in Chanel Handbags on 14.05.12

For 20 years or longer, author-illustrator Maurice Sendak has claimed that child psychologist Bruno Bettelheim mercilessly attacked his 1963 book Where the Wild Things Are when it was first published Replica BCBG Dresses, causing him and the book great damage.

“Wild Things ran into a lot of trouble when it was published,” Sendak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in a Dec. 4, 1989, story. ”It was considered ugly. It was considered far-fetched. It was considered too frightening to children. Bruno Bettelheim denounced the book, which put a damper on it for a long time.”

Twelve years later, Sendak was slamming Bettelheim again, telling the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (Aug. 10, 2001):

When [Where the Wild Things Are] that came out, there were psychologists who said, “This is a bad book. Any mother who sends their child to bed without dinner is a terrible mother.” They objected to that Christian Audigier Clothes sale, they objected to him being so rude to his mother, they objected to her yelling back at him, they objected to the Wild Things being too scary. They objected to everything. When it was first published it was very novel and different. In fact, a very important psychologist [Bruno Bettelheim] said that. He did take that back later in life. He did me a lot of damage at the beginning. [Brackets in the original.]

Sendak was still seething about Bettelheim in a June 4, 2005, interview with NPR:

Sendak: And that creep—oh Cheap Christian Audigier Clothes, that creep, that psychiatrist, Bruno Bettelheim …
NPR: Who …
Sendak: … otherwise known by me personally as “Beno Brutalheim,” because he wrote a long article on Wild Things, which completely destroyed the book.
NPR: Bruno Bettelheim, when Wild Things came out, said that it might frighten children.
Sendak: [Adopts foreign accent] “Don’t leave the book in a room without a light, because the kid might die of a heart attack.” No, he didn’t say that, but you’ve got it.
[Soundbite of laughter]
Sendak: Mr. Brutalheim, may he rest in peace.

By force of repetition, the Bettelheim-made-my-life-hell throughline has become a part of Sendak’s permanent history. Last weekend, in preview pieces about the Spike Jonze movie based on the book Cheap White Herve leger, both the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journalpegged Bettelheim, who died in 1990, as an early and influential foe of Wild Things.

But like Max’s travels in Where the Wild Things Are Discount Bandage dresses, Sendak’s version is almost completely imaginary. Bettelheim’s criticism came more than five years after Where the Wild Things Are was published, appearing in the March 1969 edition of Ladies’ Home Journal, where he answered mothers’ child-rearing questions in a monthly column. Furthermore, Bettelheim admitted in his column that he wasn’t familiar with the book and that his comments “may be very unfair.” (Later, he would confess that he had never opened it.) He judged the book based on descriptions provided by the mothers.

What did Bettelheim say? The offending column, titled “The Care and Feeding of Monsters,” is reproduced in Heads On and We Shoot: The Making of Where the Wild Things Are. Bettelheim—who doesn’t name Sendak—writes, “What’s wrong with the book is that the author was obviously captivated by an adult psychological understanding of how to deal with destructive fantasies in the child. What he failed to understand is the incredible fear it evokes in the child to be sent to bed without supper, and this by the first and foremost giver of food and security—his mother.”

Bettelheim’s assessment was negative, but hardly book-wrecking, especially considering the grand reception the book enjoyed. In March 1964, it received the Caldecott Medal for the best American picture book, the most prestigious prize of its kind. Today, there are 19 million copies of it in print around the world.

Some reviewers did think the book might be too frightening for children. In a Jan. 22, 1966, New Yorker(subscription required) profile of Sendak, Nat Hentoff collects several of the critical responses. “We should not like to have it left about where a sensitive child might find it to pore over in the twilight,” stated the Journal of Nursery Education. Publishers’ Weekly offered a mix of praise and criticism, saying that “the plan and technique of the illustrations are superb. … But they may well prove frightening, accompanied as they are by a pointless and confusing story.” Library Journal’s critic wrote, “This is the kind of story that many adults will question and for many reasons, but the child will accept it wisely and without inhibition Herve Leger sale, as he knows it is written for him.”

Perhaps the most insightful review harvested by Hentoff came from the Cleveland Press: “Boys and girls may have to shield their parents from this book. Parents are very easily scared.”

The idea Buy Christian Audigier Clothing, it would seem Hale Bob Dresses sale, was to show off what they could do with fiberglass. Nobody ever expected they’d build it. And they didn’t. The Candidate Killers

Posted in Chanel Handbags on 14.05.12

At the heart of every campaign there is a haunting question, the problem the candidate can never seem to shake. Is Michael Dukakis too liberal? Is George W. Bush too inexperienced? Sometimes the press or opponents manufacture the question, as in: Is Al Gore a big phony? Sometimes, the question comes out of an obvious Cheap Christian Audigier Clothes, inescapable issue Discount BCBG Dresses, as in 2004: Will the Iraq war sink Bush?

Over the summer White Herve leger sale, I will take a periodic look at the key question each campaign is facing. Does Mitt Romney believe anything? Can John Edwards win enough votes as a poverty fighting populist? Throughout the campaign Buy DKNY Clothing, we’ll return to these questions. Perhaps the candidate will succeed in answering the question—McCain can rebrand himself as a conservative—and perhaps the question will keep popping up because it can’t be answered. In some cases, we may bid adieu to candidates who are consumed by their big question.

The first piece in the series is about Rudy Giuliani: Can a social moderate get the nomination in a party that evangelical Christians have dominated? The second piece  is about Hillary Clinton: Can she overcome her likeability problem? The third is about Barack Obama and whether he has enough experience to get elected. I’ve got ideas about the questions some of the other candidates face Replica White Herve leger, but I welcome your advice. Please send your own suggestions to slatepolitics@gmail.com  (e-mail may be quoted by name unless the writer stipulates otherwise). iPhone Suck-Up Watch

Posted in Chanel Handbags on 13.05.12

Apple iPhones

The press corps’ romance with all things Apple has taken a coquettish turn. After being criticized for swooning over every shiny new gadget that Steve Jobs announces, reporters are playing hard-to-get this week. In their stories they first scorn the universal hype over the iPhone, then they multiply it by sending a tempered message of love to their favorite new piece of gear.

The best way to locate these semi-conflicted Valentines is to search Google News for the words iPhone and hype. The lede to Ellen Lee’s piece in the San Francisco Chronicle (June 26) about the iPhone perfectly pairs disdain for the “hype” with zeal for the product: “The iPhone won’t stop global warming. It won’t bring peace to the Middle East,” she begins. Then, drawing a constellation of hearts in her reporter’s notebook, she writes, “But if it lives up to even a portion of the hype Replica Tudor Watches, it does have the potential to change how people interact with their cell phones, computers and each other.” If the iPhone raises a dial tone, Lee will claim it lived up to its hype.

This week, the ordinarily sensible Farhad Manjoo of Salon acknowledges that “the sane response … is to wish that people would shut up already about the iPhone” before explaining why “people should care despite the hype.” The iPhone is important because it could “change the larger phone business,” and “you should care about the iPhone even if you aren’t buying one” because of the copycat products it will inspire.

USA Today’s Leslie Cauley wrote a breathless sidebar for her newspaper’s June 21 edition describing the 200 lucky bastards who’ve spent 10 Fake BMW Watches,000 hours torturing the “must-have cellphone of the year.” Apple and AT&T justify the rough treatment of the iPhone because in order to be successful “the iPhone must live up to its hype.” They dropped it on concrete Replica Roger Dubuis Watches, hosed it down with water, and even took it where consumers go: “office buildings, subway platforms, stairwells, elevators, crowded bars, sprawling suburban malls and congested city streets.” As Merv Griffin used to say on his show, “Oooooo, that’s good!”

In the last two days Replica Breitling Watches for Cheap, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the New York Times, the New York Sun Where find Replica Romain Jerome Watches, Houston Chronicle, the Contra Costa Times, the Marin Independent Journal, the Staten Island Advance, the New York Daily News, the Lansing State Journal, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, USA Today, and the Associated Press have all run stories about iPhone campers massing outside Apple stores in the days and hours before the devices went on sale. The AP story captured Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street sitting in a lawn chair outside an AT&T store Fake Casio Watches, third in line for the iPhone queue.

The sounds of more sucking: Hype-slayer Josh Quittner knocks iPhone reviewers David Pogue ( New York Times) and Ed Baig (USA Today) for potential conflict of interest because both writers have iPhone books coming out. Their books will succeed only if the iPhone succeeds, Quittner’s argument runs, so they have a vested interest in the iPhone’s success. In his review of Pogue and Baig’s iPhone reviews (and the Wall Street Journal’s and Newsweek’s) Quittner declares:

[W]hat virtually none of our reviews says outright is this: Unless you’re rich or have gadget-compulsive disorder, you’d be out of your Steve Jobs-addled, Reality-Distortion-Field-infected mind to buy one of these phones right now. These are strictly Version 1.0—and there’s a lot that needs to be improved.

Perhaps no daily has gone crazier for the iPhone in the last eight days than the New York Times, which has devoted about 7,000 words to the topic in six stories.

The Wall Street Journal’s Breakingviews.com column indirectly critiqued the squall of coverage by deflating the product’s potential market impact. In “iPhone Hazard: Value Gap” (June 28, subscribers only), the columnists find the stock market wildly overreacting to the iPhone’s arrival. Apple’s market cap has increased by $34 billion since the January announcement of the iPhone, they write. Noting that Apple hopes to sell 10 million of the devices by the end of 2008, they go on to compare the iPhone market to the Nokia cellphone market:

[Nokia] should sell about 550 million phones in the same period. The Finnish group’s market cap is $108 billion. So even though it will sell 55 phones for every iPhone, investors think it’s only worth three times as much as Apple’s fledgling business, taking the $34 billion increase in Apple’s market value as a proxy.

Or look at it another way. Apple and Nokia both had operating margins of 13% last year. If Apple sells seven million phones next year of the 10 million it expects to sell by 2009, and earns similar margins, operating profit for the phone business should be somewhere around $350 million. So the phone business is valued at close to 100 times estimated 2008 operating profits. Nokia trades at 10 times. Even if one assumes the iPhone snatches some of Nokia’s market share, this gap looks excessive.

Suing Science

Ken Cuccinelli

“This old buzzard, having failed to raise the mob against its rulers Where buy best Replica Vacheron Constantin Watches, now prepares to raise it against its teachers.”

H.L. Mencken
Scopes Monkey Trial
July 16, 1925

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli started the week by attempting to cover up the offending left breast of the Roman goddess Virtus on the Virginia state seal worn on the lapels of his staff. Last night he dropped the effort and issued a statement indicating he’d decided to stop trying to make Virtus more virtuous. Designed by a committee that included George Wythe Replica Porsche Design Watches for Cheap, George Mason, Robert Carter Nicholas Fake Movado Watches, and Richard Henry Lee, the bare-breasted Virtus has been on the state seal since 1776. A version has been on the state flag since 1861. But when Cuccinelli tried to put Virtus in a burqa this week, the darling of the Tea Party movement explained without irony: “Just because we’ve always done something a certain way doesn’t mean we always have to continue doing it that way.”

Seriously?

The problem with Breastgate was that it distracted from Cuccinelli’s other efforts to press the legal machinery of the commonwealth into the service of his own agenda. Between his thwarted attempts to rescind anti-discrimination policies for gays and lesbians at Virginia universities Replica Anonimo Watches, his one-man lawsuit against Obamacare Replica MB&F Watches, his recent approval of a new state policy allowing sectarian prayer by state police chaplains at public events, and his lawsuit suit against the EPA for attempting to regulate greenhouse gases Replica Girard Perregaux Watches, Ken Cuccinelli has become the Where’s Waldo of Fox News stories. But his latest attack—against the University of Virginia’s climate science researchers—is more troubling than his assault on bare-breasted Romans.

As Courtney Stuart first reported last week in Charlottesville’s The Hook, Cuccinelli’s office quietly filed a civil investigative demand (or CID, which is basically a subpoena) with the University of Virginia on April 23, giving the school 30 days to produce more than 10 years’ worth of documents related to the state-funded research of a former faculty member, Michael Mann. Operating under the Virginia Fraud Against Taxpayers Act, the CID seeks from the university, among other things, “any correspondence, messages or emails” to or from Mann and 40 named climate scientists; any documents sent to or from Mann that reference any of those 40 scientists; and any “documents, things or data” submitted in support of any of five different grant applications that amounted, in total, to almost $500,000. The university is also expected to turn over “any and all emails or pieces of correspondence from or to Dr. Michael Mann since he left the University of Virginia.”

With final exams and graduation just days away, the faculty of the school’s environmental science department must now sift through years’ worth of old e-mails and attempt to understand the scope of the CID. More important, they must worry about whether their own scientific research will become Cuccinelli’s next target.

And who is this nefarious Michael Mann? A climate scientist who worked at UVA from 1999 to 2005 and now runs Penn State’s Earth System Science Center. He became the climate-change deniers’ whipping boy because of a 1999 paper he co-authored showing a dramatic uptick in surface temperatures after 1900. His temperature graph looks like the blade of a hockey stick. The hockey stick, and Mann, have been on trial ever since.
